Meinl CA5BK turbo cabasa, medium

The Meinl CA5BK is a medium-sized turbo cabasa, which is an instrument that is very popular in, for instance, bossa nova music. Compared to a regular cabasa, this turbo version has the edge when it comes to volume. That is because this piston-shaped instrument has a resonance chamber with five sound ports on either side which greatly amplifies the scraping, rustling sounds of the chain.
How it works
The cabasa's sound is created by friction between the metal beads on the chain and the special texture of the stainless steel cylinder. This friction is created when you shake and twist the cabasa, holding it by the padded wooden handle, after which the aforementioned resonance chamber amplifies and disperses the sound.
